The made-to-measure rug, from the artist's drawing to the measure of the room

What a made-to-measure rug means at a publisher, how it is decided at the showroom, approved on a final proof and made in Nepal or India.

The made-to-measure rug, from the artist's drawing to the measure of the room

Yes, we publish made-to-measure rugs. The starting point is not carpet cut by the metre but a drawing by one of our artists, taken to the exact dimensions of the room. The piece is then hand-knotted in Nepal or hand-tufted in India, according to the drawing and the use. Everything begins with a quote, continues with a final proof, and ends in your home: in Paris, large rugs are delivered and installed.

What “made to measure” means at a publisher

The term covers very different realities. For many retailers, it designates carpet or sisal cut to the desired length, then bound. With us, it designates an artist's rug made for a specific room. The drawing remains that of the artist; it is the measure that changes, and sometimes the shape, so that the motif falls right in the space.

This work is done with the publisher, Sandrine Demas, from the plans of the room and a drawing from our collections, whether a Sur le fil by Renaud Allirand or a Nef by Christian Signorel.

Dimensions and shapes

Made to measure begins where the catalogue ends. Our collections already cover the large living-room formats, up to 300 x 400 cm in hand-knotting and 300 x 300 cm in tufting; our article on the size of a living-room rug details them collection by collection. Beyond that, the measure is calculated from the room itself: position of the windows, the doors, the circulation, the fixed furniture. A hand-knotted project for an architect's villa in Corsica thus reached 5 x 6 m.

Shape follows the same logic. The rectangle remains the most common case, but the round, the four-lobed Nef or the MINOTOR Oblong already exist in our collections and can serve as a basis. Our terms of sale provide for a tolerance of 3% on dimensions, inherent in handwork.

Hand-knotted or hand-tufted

The technique is chosen according to the drawing, the use and the size. Hand-knotting in Nepal, in hand-spun Himalayan wool, becomes supple enough, once washed and stretched, to travel folded in a crate, which eases the entry of very large formats. Hand-tufting in India, stiffer, travels rolled, which requires special transport beyond 3 m. Our article hand-knotted or hand-tufted details what each gesture gives the rug.

From the showroom to the final proof

The project begins at the showroom, rue du Bac or rue Cardinet, from an existing drawing seen on the floor, in its light. Then come the measurements and the quote. Once the quote is signed, we draw up a final proof before launching in the workshop. Nothing is made without this approval.

The making time is indicated on the quote. It depends on the workshops' work, the technique and the surface: in Saint-Tropez, a hand-knotted Sur le fil rug to the exact dimensions of a living room required four months of work.

Delivery and installation

Large rugs are delivered and installed in Paris, and delivered in metropolitan France by specialist carriers, at the rates indicated in our general terms of sale. A knotted rug arrives folded: one unfolds it, it takes its place again, and a little walking over it is enough.

What to know before ordering

A piece made to your measurements cannot be resold as it is. That is why the law excludes made-to-measure pieces from the right of withdrawal (article L. 221-28 of the French Consumer Code), as our terms of sale recall. They remain covered by the legal guarantee of conformity and the guarantee against hidden defects. The final proof is therefore the moment when everything is decided: take the time to reread it, and to come back to see the drawing at the showroom if need be.

Which shapes are possible for a made-to-measure rug?
